Abstract - Music being a temporal art form, goes hand in hand with mathematics. Indian music explores mathematical ideas to a great extent. 'Tala', which is a rhythmic cycle, a unique rhythmic concept of Indian music, has been conceptualized with various mathematical interpretations. Apart from 'tala' several other concepts of Indian music have been theorized using mathematical ideas. Among the two classical styles of Indian music, South Indian Classical music known as Carnatic music followed a systematic approach in establishing the concepts related to melody and rhythm. Many concepts were designed based on perfect logic involving simple mathematical rules. There is always scope to study and analyze the concepts as well as propose new ones using mathematical ideas. The objective of this paper is to connect various concepts of South Indian Classical music to some mathematical ideas, principles or rules. There has been an attempt to give new representation to few concepts to broaden the perspective. This paper also attempts to present the scope of creativity in music using some mathematical ideas, taking the logic in them. This interdisciplinary study enables one to enjoy the inter transferability of concepts.
