Advanced Jazz Arranging: from the Draft to the Main Score

Abstract - Very often, beginner jazz arrangers (and sometimes professionals) turn out to be unable to coherently manage the arrangement process, losing consciousness during the writing. In this article we discuss a method based on the preliminary creation of a draft, written so as to lead the arranger, step by step, towards the conscious attainment of the Final Score. The Draft is extremely concise, and the notation is always explicit and therefore explicative: any particular is constantly under control, from the Functional Harmonization (4WC) of the Theme to the Inter-Sectional Counterpoint, from the Special to the "Call and Response" Sections.
