The Motivic Segmentation and the ICVSIM Analysis in Scriabin's Op. 8 No. 4

Authors: Nikita Mamedov
Categories: Journal

Abstract - Scriabin's early-period piano music initiates a groundbreaking artistic process driven by pianistic reforms through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Scriabin's Op. 8 études showcase the composer's past influences and novel compositional ideas. Scriabin's focus on chromaticism and lyrical expressiveness in Op. 8 No. 4 holds the key to the compositional balance between voicing and harmonic complexity. The current study applies the ICVSIM analysis technique to examine intervallic similarities Scriabin used in various motivic structures upon which the composer constructed the étude. The study's ICVSIM analysis provided a deeper understanding of the motivic development and harmonic nuances within Scriabin's Op. 8 No. 4, shedding light on the composer's innovative use of chromaticism and motivic transformation.
