Abstract - The Institute of Audiovisual Media in Education (I.M.A.V.E.) was established in 1964, to enhance mass education in Portugal through new communication technologies. These pedagogical programmes on radio and television, included music-related activities, such as Musical Education classes in the TVSchool format (Telescola in Portuguese), and the transmission of I.M.A.V.E.'s Classical Orchestra concerts. In both cases, music education played a role in stimulating theoretical and abstract knowledge of music, promoting the geographic and social diversity of «classical» music events. The increasing use of broadcast media such as television and radio, as well as the press for the promotion of «classical» music events, challenges the reach of a forum generally associated with elitist social dynamics. This endeavour significantly contributed to reducing illiteracy rates in Portugal and fostered the cultural development of the population. During the Estado Novo dictatorship, this initiative served as a democratizing tool for mass education, which remained ideologically relevant after the Portuguese Revolution of 1974.
