Analysis on Online Music Reviews for Dream Theater's Album "Images and Words"

Abstract - Dream Theater is one of the leading progressive metal bands. Previous studies have investigated various factors such as music, technique, and lyrics of Dream Theater. Currently, there have been no studies focusing on listeners of Dream Theater. The investigation for viewpoints of listeners contribute to further understanding for progressive metal and Dream Theater. Online music reviews are useful for understanding how listeners evaluate music. However, it is difficult to analyze many various sentences of online reviews. The text mining technique is known as a methodology to analyze many sentences. The objective of this study was to analyze online music reviews for the studio album "Images and Words" of Dream Theater by using a text mining technique. A total of more than 8000 sentences of online reviews were extracted from the music review website Prog Archives. These sentences were analyzed by a word co-occurrence network based on the Jaccard index. The results showed the possibility that many listeners of Dream Theater are interested in guitar and keyboard parts. Furthermore, these listeners focused on related musicians such as King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and Iron Maiden. These musicians were not limited to only progressive metal. These results show the viewpoints of Dream Theater's listeners. In addition, these results indicate that text mining techniques can contribute to analyzing online music reviews.
